Vanessa Lloyd Platt Family Law Commentator of the Year 2013

I am absolutely honoured to announce that last night, I received the Family Law Award for Family Law Commentator of the Year 2013, at the Jordans Family Law Awards. The prestigious award ceremony celebrates excellence in Family Law and was held at the London Park Lane Hilton Hotel.

I would like to give my warmest appreciation to all of those who took the time and trouble to vote for me, as well as the unswerving support of my family, friends and colleagues.

Yesterday, The Hon. Mr Justice Coleridge suggested that Family Law needs radical changes. After attending the Family Law Awards last night, it is clear there are some truly outstanding family lawyers from all areas of family law who continue to dedicate themselves to sensible resolution of family problems, including divorce, child abduction, child contact and financial settlements.

Although The Hon Mr Justice Coleridge believes the entire family law system should be swept away with radical reforms brought into place, there is no doubt that the introduction of a family court would revolutionize the family law system. The family court would need adequate staffing so that all cases could be dealt with efficiently, quickly and simplistically. The new and improved court system would aid the majority of clients who want a decision made by an independent Judge in order to bring their unhappy disputes to a close. Whilst other forms of resolution have been tried, they are far outweighed by the clients desire to utilize a system in which a decision is made through a recognised and respected judiciary.

Although some changes are clearly necessary, I sincerely hope, as do most practitioners in this field, that the matrimonial system will not be watered down to the same degree as our troubled educational system, where illiteracy and innumeracy have been at an all-time high.  We currently have a legal system that is admired by the world and whilst most of us accept that some tweaks are necessary, I implore those in power not to make the same mistakes made previously by those in the education field. It would be a shame to completely alter the nature of the system so that it fails everyone it is supposed to support and protect.

Together with my colleagues I will continue commenting on major issues that affect families and children in a profession I dearly love.
